Yearly Performances:

  December:
Every year Dance Works has a small show in December.  This is just a demonstration to the families of the students what they have been learning so far in the school year.  There are no costumes involved in this show and it is usually held at one of the local school gymnasiums.  We also raise money through raffles and baked goods during this show for our Scholarship Fund.

June:
In June we have our year-end show. This is the big event of the year and takes place at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibson’s. There are usually 4 peformances over 2 days (2 Evening - Sr. Show & 2 Matinee - Jr. Show). This enables all family members to get a chance to see the performance. We seperate the  school into two shows to keep performance times at a minimum.  The Jr. Show consists of all Pre Primary to Jr. classes.  The Sr. Show consisits of all Intermediate, Pre Teen - Adult Classes. This enables all family members to get a chance to see the performance. There is a dress rehearsals for both Sr. & Jr. Show the days before the first show.   Children are required to wear the costume designed for their class in the show and are yours to keep once the show is over. The performance is filmed by a professional vidoegrapher, as well as by Coast Cable.  You are also able to purchase a copy of the show DVD’ through the school.  Exact dates for this years show will given to you early in the year.

Charity Performances:
Many students from Dance Works offer their talent to local events every year.  This past year Dance Works students participated in S.O.P.A. (Show Case of the PErforming Arts) and Seacavalcade.  For this next school years performances we will be posting the dates on the home page so keep checking in.

1. Q: Where do I take my children to get them ready for the show?
A: You should bring your children to the Green Room, which is
   downstairs. In the Heritage Playhouse.

2. Q: Can I wait with them in the Green Room?
A:  We are asking that parents NOT wait in the green room if it is not            necessary as there is so little space for the dancers to get ready and
over crowding brings up too many safety issues.  The Pre Primary I & II
class may have 1 parent wait with them in the green room and any
children who may be older but have separation anxieties may have 1
   parent accompany them as well.

3. Q:  Who will watch my child if I am in the audience or waiting to pick
   them up after they perform?
A: We are arranging to have babysitting with colouring and kids movies
for all three performances as well as the dress rehearsal so that you can
simply sign your children in when you drop them off and sign them out
when you pick them up.  For the show(s) that you are attending the
babysitting is available for the entire show so you can enjoy the entire
performance.  If you are not attending all shows, as most do not, you can
pick up your child when they have finished performing.  Pre Primary I &
II Ballet (Wed 1:30 & 3:30 class) have special directions. Please refer to the
   Important Info for Parents letter.

4. Q:  How do I know when my child is finished performing?
A:  We will have a performance schedule for you at the dress rehearsal so
you can have a general idea when they will finish performing.  Of course       always give consideration that they might go 5 –10 minutes over the time
posted due to unforeseen delays that often occur during performances
    such as these.

5. Q:  Can I leave the audience to collect my child immediately after they
   finish their dance?
A:  We ask that you refrain from leaving the audience until the
intermission unless of course it is urgent as it is very disruptive to the
dancers who follow as well as all the other parents who are watching when
an entire class of parents get up and leave.  It also disrupts the lighting and
sound technician so your co-operation on this matter is greatly appreciated.

6. Q: Can I take pictures of videotape the performance?
A:  You may take picture and videotape the performances as long as you
are mindful not to use excessive flash photography, as it is distracting to
   the dancers.

7. Q: What about my child hair and make up?
A: We will have a volunteer helping with the hair and makeup in the
green room when you drop off your children.  If you are able to have your
Child's hair done when you arrive it would be appreciated. Pre Primary I
& II will need to have their hair in two buns on either side of their head.
Also bring extra elastic, bobby pins (same colour as hair), blush, lipstick,
and eyebrow liner. Please refer to Make up and Hair Directions Newsletter.

8. Q: Will any of the performances be video taped by a videographer?
A: Coast Cable will be videotaping the Friday night show and will be
showing it on Channel 11 at a later date.  We are also having a private
videographer, Amos Harding record the Saturday night show and you will be able to
order a copy of this from him. His contact information is as follows:
    Amos Harding : 604-886-0320

9. Q: Does my child really need to attend the Dress rehearsal?
A: We require all children who will be performing to attend the dress
rehearsal, as it is the only time that the children get a chance to see the
difference in spacing on the stage in comparison to the studio they are
accustomed too. Also the lighting technician need to see what the children
look like on the stage so he can make sure that the lighting compliments
them and no one is left in the dark.  The dress rehearsal is necessary for all
to iron out any kinks before the performance.  Please speak to Penny as
soon as possible if you think that this might be a problem for your
   schedule.

10.Q: How long is each performance?
A:  We are aiming to keep the show at a maximum of 1hr and 45
minutes. There will also be a 15-minute intermission half way through so
you can stretch your legs and have some refreshments from the front.

11.Q: Can my child bring a snack to the Green Room?
A:  Please bring water or dry cracker or dry cereal for your children to
munch on. Please no sticky foods, juice or pop.  We need to eliminate any
stain hazards as all the children will be in their costumes and cannot
afford to have them dirtied before the performance.

Make Up Application Direction

Younger children should wear blush, lipstick, eyebrow liner, and a little eye shadow or mascara if able to. Vaseline can also be used to darken fair eyebrows. Note: younger children may be sensitive to these products, but please try to apply at least blush and lip colour. All older students should wear blush, eye shadow or liner, mascara, eyebrow liner, & foundation.  Please try to apply as much as possible at home as there is very limited space in the Green Room.  There will be a volunteer to help with hair and makeup if you need.  Please bring your own hair and makeup products.  There will be extras provided but it is recommended for sanitary reasons to provide your own.
