Dance Works Code of Conduct
At Dance Works we aim to provide a safe and encouraging environment where students can acquire the skills to express themselves in movement, acting and song. We offer both a recreational program and a professional program. We encourage all students, parents and teachers to treat each other in a warm and courteous fashion. If any student or parent has a concern regarding another student, parent or a teacher please contact Penny or Zoë at the Dance Works Office so we can better assist you and resolve any problems.
Constructive Vs. Destructive Criticism
Our teachers implement constructive criticism as a teaching tool, when necessary. This is used only to assist students in fully utilizing the skills being taught. We do not allow destructive criticism at any time! Examples of both are:
Constructive: “Sally, that was a great jump, but could you stretch your right foot a little more?”
Destructive: “Sally, your jump stinks, you didn’t even stretch your feet.”
Constructive: “Class, we really need to amply our selves a bit more in the next month in order to get through all the work for the XMAS show, I know you can do it!!”
Destructive: “Class, you haven’t done anything so far, quit being lazy.”
Again, if you have any concerns regarding constructive critisism in class please contact Penny or Zoë at any time.
Our Programs
The Recreational Program:
This program consists of classes that are on a recreational level or for pleasure and performance only. Students are expected to follow the general guidelines for acceptable behavior but are not expected to give the same level of effort as the professional program.
The Professional Program:
This program consists of any classes that are for examination, competition or credentials. As we expect all students to follow the general guidelines for acceptable behavior, students taking these classes should be aware that a higher level of dedication is required than is in the recreational program. This is necessary to ensure that the students acquire the technique necessary for exams and competitions. The teachers will expect more physical output from students in this program, and some may require additional class time to complete all the syllabus requirements. Though this program is more
rigorous than the recreational program it is a great way for the more serious dancer to acquire credentials for future use in the style of dance that they enjoy.
